The three odds formats
| Format | Example | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Fractional | 5/2 | The profit against the stake. At 5/2 you win 5 for every 2 you stake, and your stake comes back as well. It is also known as British, UK or traditional odds. |
| Decimal | 3.50 | What one unit of stake returns, with the stake included. At 3.50 a stake of 1 returns 3.50. |
| American | +250 or -200 | A plus is the profit on a stake of 100, so +250 wins 250. A minus is the stake needed to win 100, so -200 means staking 200 to win 100. |
How to convert by hand
- Fractional to decimal: first number ÷ second number + 1.
- Decimal to fractional: take away 1 and write the rest as a fraction.
- American to decimal: for a plus price, the number ÷ 100 + 1. For a minus price, 100 ÷ the number without its sign + 1.
- Decimal to American: at 2.00 or more, take away 1, multiply by 100 and add a plus. Below 2.00, divide 100 by what is left after taking away 1, and add a minus.
For example, fractional odds of 13/8 are 2.63 in decimal and +163 in American.

How this converter works
- Choose the format you are typing in. Switching format keeps the same price and rewrites the box.
- The fraction is the exact value of the price you entered, in its simplest form. A decimal price of 1.33 is 33/100.
- Decimal odds are shown to two decimal places, and American odds are rounded to the nearest whole number.
- American odds between -100 and +100 are not accepted. Evens is +100.
- The implied probability is what the price says. It is not a forecast of the result.
Questions
- How do I convert fractional odds to decimal?
- Divide the first number by the second and add 1. Fractional odds of 5/2 are 5 ÷ 2 + 1 = 3.50 in decimal.
- How do I convert decimal odds to fractional?
- Take away 1 and write what is left as a fraction. Decimal odds of 3.50 leave 2.5, which is 5/2.
- How do I convert American odds to decimal?
- For a plus price, divide the number by 100 and add 1: +250 is 3.50. For a minus price, divide 100 by the number without its minus sign and add 1: -200 is 1.50.
- What do +250 and -200 mean?
- A plus is the profit on a stake of 100, so +250 wins 250. A minus is the stake you need to win 100, so -200 means staking 200 to win 100.
- Why is 1/3 shown as 1.33 and not exactly 1.3333?
- Decimal odds are shown to two decimal places, so 1/3 appears as 1.33. The other way round, 1.33 is exactly 33/100, and this converter shows that exact fraction.
- Do the three formats change the bet?
- No. They are three ways to write one price. Fractional 5/2, decimal 3.50 and American +250 all pay the same.
- What is the implied probability of a price?
- It is the probability the price implies, as a percentage. Odds of 5/2 imply 28.57%. It is what the price says, not a forecast of the result.
