What a Patent is

A Patent is a full cover bet with three selections in different events. It is made up of seven bets: three singles, three doubles and one treble. To get a return, at least one of the selections must win.

Each bet is placed at the same stake, so a £1 stake on each bet costs £7. Drop the singles and you have a Trixie, which has its own Trixie calculator.

What the returns look like

These rows use odds of 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 and a £1 stake on each of the seven bets, so the total stake is £7.00. They come from the same calculation as the calculator above.

Returns from a Patent at odds of 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 by how many selections win
ResultBets that returnReturns
One selection wins1£2.00
Selections 1 and 2 win3£11.00
All three win7£59.00

A return is not always a profit. With selections 1 and 2 both winning at 1.5 and selection 3 at 4.0 losing, the two singles and the double return £5.25 from a total stake of £7.00.

How a Patent differs from a Trixie

A Trixie covers the same three selections with four bets, and every bet in it holds at least two selections, so one winner returns nothing. A Patent adds a single on each selection, so one winner returns something. It also costs seven stakes where the Trixie costs four, which is why a single winner can still leave you down.

How this calculator works

  • Odds can be typed as decimals (3.5), fractions (5/2) or evens.
  • Choose Won, Lost or Void for each selection. A void selection is counted as odds of 1.0 in every bet it is in.
  • Tick each way to add a place part to every bet. Choose the place terms your bookmaker offers on the race.
  • Choose a stake per bet, or a total stake that is spread evenly over the bets.
  • Bookmaker bonuses and refunds are not included. Only the base bet is settled.

Questions

What is a Patent bet?
A Patent is a full cover bet with 3 selections in different events. It is made up of 7 bets: 3 singles, 3 doubles and 1 treble.
How many selections must win for a Patent to return?
At least 1 of the 3. Because the Patent includes a single on each selection, one winner returns something. If all three lose, nothing returns.
How do I work out the returns on a Patent?
Work out each bet on its own. A single returns its stake multiplied by its odds, a double multiplies the odds of two selections, and the treble multiplies all three. Add up the bets that won.
How much does a Patent cost?
A Patent is 7 bets at the same stake, so a £1 stake on each bet costs £7 in total. An each-way Patent is 14 bets, so £1 each way costs £14.
What is the difference between a Patent and a Trixie?
Both have 3 selections. A Trixie is 4 bets: 3 doubles and 1 treble. A Patent adds a single on each selection, which makes 7 bets and means one winner can return.
Does a return from a Patent always mean a profit?
No. A Patent costs 7 stakes, so a single winner at short odds returns less than the total stake. The calculator shows the profit or loss after the full stake.
What is the difference between a Patent and a Lucky 15?
A Patent has 3 selections and 7 bets. A Lucky 15 has 4 selections and 15 bets: 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and a four-fold accumulator.
Does this calculator include bookmaker bonuses?
No. It settles the base bet only. Bonuses and refunds differ between bookmakers and change with promotions, so check your bookmaker's terms.
