What a Yankee is

A Yankee combines four selections into 11 separate bets: six doubles, four trebles and one four-fold accumulator. It is known as a cover bet, because not every selection has to win for a return to be made. If selections 2 and 3 lose, the double of selections 1 and 4 can still return.

Each bet is placed at the same stake, so the stake you choose for a bet is multiplied by 11. Add the four singles and you have a Lucky 15, which has its own Lucky 15 calculator. With three selections you have a Trixie, and the Trixie calculator settles that.

What the returns look like

These rows use odds of 5.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 2.0 and a £1 stake on each of the eleven bets, so the total stake is £11.00. They come from the same calculation as the calculator above.

A return is not always a profit. With selections 1 and 2 winning at 1.5 each, and selections 3 and 4 losing, the one double that wins returns £2.25 from a total stake of £11.00.

Rule 4 and bonuses

This calculator settles the base bet at the odds you enter. It does not apply a Rule 4 deduction or a bookmaker bonus. If a horse was withdrawn from one of your races, the Rule 4 calculator works out the deduction from the withdrawn horse's price.

How this calculator works

  • Odds can be typed as decimals (3.5), fractions (5/2) or evens.
  • Choose Won, Lost or Void for each selection. A void selection is counted as odds of 1.0 in every bet it is in.
  • Tick each way to add a place part to every bet. Choose the place terms your bookmaker offers on the race.
  • Choose a stake per bet, or a total stake that is spread evenly over the bets.

Questions

What is a Yankee bet?
A Yankee is a bet on four selections that is made up of 11 bets: six doubles, four trebles and one four-fold accumulator.
How many selections must win for a Yankee to return?
At least 2 of the 4. Every bet in a Yankee has at least two selections in it, so a single winner returns nothing. It is called a cover bet because not every selection has to win for a return to be made.
How much does a Yankee cost?
A Yankee is 11 bets at the same stake, so a £1 stake on each bet costs £11 in total. An each-way Yankee is 22 bets, so £1 each way costs £22.
Do I enter the stake per bet or the total stake?
Either. The stake per bet is the unit stake that is multiplied by 11. If you only know the total, choose total stake and the calculator spreads it evenly over the bets.
What is the difference between a Yankee and a Lucky 15?
A Lucky 15 adds the four singles to a Yankee, so it is 15 bets: four singles, six doubles, four trebles and a four-fold.
What is the difference between a Yankee and a Trixie?
A Trixie has 3 selections and 4 bets: 3 doubles and 1 treble. A Yankee has 4 selections and 11 bets.
Does a return from a Yankee always mean a profit?
No. A Yankee costs 11 stakes, so a few winners at short odds can return less than the total stake.
Does this calculator apply a Rule 4 deduction or a bonus?
No. It settles the base bet only. If a horse was withdrawn from a race, the Rule 4 calculator works out the deduction. Bonuses and refunds differ between bookmakers, so check your bookmaker's terms.
